Crossing the Trent‑Severn Seaway is one of those boating experiences that stays with you. Forty‑three locks in total, ranging from small rises to massive 60‑foot chambers. After completing the full run, we joked that we might need a month off just to recover from all the locking.
Mechanical Work at the Start
Before entering the system, we had our bow thruster installed — a decision that paid off immediately. Brad, a local mechanic, was outstanding. He repaired our generator, helped install the thruster, and even worked through the weekend to make sure everything was perfect. When you’re facing a 30‑foot concrete lock wall for the first time, confidence in your equipment matters.
Locking Through
Once inside the system, Vikki and I settled into a solid routine. She handled the lines like a pro, even in the tallest locks. We stayed at marinas, lock walls, and small towns along the way. Fenelon Falls gave us one of the more memorable evenings — we entered a trivia contest at a local bar and finished 4th out of a full room. Not bad for a two‑person team.
Highlights Along the Route
Two engineering marvels define the Trent‑Severn:
- Peterborough Lift Lock A 60‑foot hydraulic lift that raises you straight into the sky. Vikki handled it like a champ despite her fear of heights.
- Big Chute Marine Railway A one‑of‑a‑kind experience where your boat is lifted in a cradle and carried over land to the next waterway. It turned out to be the easiest part of the trip — far less intimidating than it looks.
We also visited Parry Sound and the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame, a great stop for any hockey fan.
People We Met Along the Way
In Port of Orillia, we met a wonderful couple at the Canadian Legion. They introduced us to a restaurant where you cook your steak on a 600‑degree lava stone — one piece at a time. It was so good we went twice. They also took us to the casino, and we all ended the night with a profit.
We’re looking forward to seeing them again in Florida and taking them to a Buccaneers game.
Looking Back
The Trent‑Severn gave us challenges, new skills, and great memories. We learned a lot, met good people, and came out the other side with stories we’ll be telling for years.
