Our Lake Ontario crossing started with a classic Loop moment: Me vs AI. My navigation apps and charts insisted St. Catharines was 120 miles away. AI insisted it was 55. No matter what I typed in, AI refused to budge. It was like arguing with a very confident toddler.

We left in the morning on glass‑calm water, and after a little time underway, AI finally admitted it made a “misstate.” Yes — AI apologized. I’m framing that moment.
Captain Vikki and I decided, “Let’s do a fast crossing and get there early.” So we cranked it up to 20 mph, enjoying the rare pleasure of having a boat that can actually do that speed. Lake Ontario was smooth, the sun was out, and we were laughing about our 120‑mile‑55‑mile debate the whole way.
We arrived in St. Catharines a day early and tied up at the city dock — and ended up staying seven days. During that time:
- Our friends drove over from Toronto for a visit.
- We picked up mail and my new iPhone from a drop box in Niagara Falls, NY.
- We celebrated Canada Day AND the 4th of July at Niagara Falls — double fireworks, double crowds, double fun.
- We spent another day touring local vineyards, because when in Niagara… you drink Niagara.
Lake Ontario gave us calm water, fast running, a navigation argument, an AI apology, and a week of celebrations. Not bad for one crossing.
